June Solemnities

June 2024-2

This month includes several important celebrations in the Church. In particular, two of these solemnities honor titles for which two of our Catholic cemeteries are named: the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the Solemnity of Ss. Peter and Paul.

In celebrating the Sacred Heart (on June 7 this year), we rejoice in the great love which Christ pours out for all of us. In fact, the whole month of June is commonly called the month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This solemnity originates from Christ’s revelations to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 1670s, which also gave us 12 promises of Jesus for those who venerate, and promote devotion to, the Sacred Heart. Learn more about devotion to the Sacred Heart here.

The celebration of the Solemnity of Ss. Peter and Paul on June 29 honors these great apostles as founders of the Church of Rome. Called by Christ to spread the Gospel (even through martyrdom), these saints helped to ensure that the faith is handed on until the Lord comes again. Visit this link for a resource to practice lectio divina with the Mass readings from this solemnity.

Together, these wonderful occasions point toward that same gift which we proclaim through our ministry of Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of St. Louis: the blessed hope of eternal life in Jesus Christ.
