Fourth Sunday of Lent

4th-sunday-of-lent

Last week, we reflected on the sacraments and the healing grace God offers us in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  And today, Laetare Sunday, the halfway mark of Lent, we reflect on the Parable of the Prodigal Son.

The younger son demands, “‘Father give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’” In other words, “Father, you are not dying fast enough and I want my inheritance now. Give it to me.”  His demand is insulting and it is easy to condemn his actions.  Yet, we are just like the prodigal son.  How often do we say to God, our Father, “Father, I know this sinful act will displease you and put me at risk of being separated from you eternally. But, I want it now, so I will ignore you.” Our demands are just as insulting and revolting in our relationship with God, our Father!

Eventually, the prodigal son returns to his father poor, broken and aware of his selfishness; and, his waiting father races to embrace him and restore him. Just like the father of the prodigal son, God, our Father, awaits your return to him in whatever condition you may be.  Allow him to pour his mercy and love over you.

Take a moment to seriously reflect on your actions and ask yourself…

When was the last time I made a heartfelt, sacramental confession?

Do I make excuses for myself regarding sinful actions?

As long as we have life, there is still time for repentance; there is still time for mercy!  God gives us this time, to seek his forgiveness and to be washed clean by the blood of his Son. “Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor 6:2).
